Winter motoring advice
Police in Bridgend are offering motorists timely advice on keeping their vehicles safe and secure during the extreme winter weather.
Chief Inspector Jay Dave said: “During the extremely cold weather we are currently experiencing it is commonplace for motorists to start their vehicles on frosty mornings, and return to the warmth of the house, leaving the engine running to warm the car up, and melt frost on the windows.
“Whilst this is understandable the vehicle is then at high risk of theft, after all, the keys are in the ignition and the engine is running – everything a car thief needs for a swift getaway. It is also worth considering that many insurance companies may not compensate for the loss of a car in these circumstances.
“However, failure to clear frost from all car windows prior to a journey is dangerous due to reduced visibility increasing chances of a collision. For this reason it is an offence under the Road Traffic Act.
“For safe winter driving it is also worth checking your vehicle’s tyres, lights, heating and battery. Also, if lights are required in bad weather please use dipped headlights, sidelights may not be enough – you need to be seen and be able to see others.
“Above all please consider whether your journey is really necessary. If it is make sure you have plenty of fuel, warm clothes and put a spade on the boot in case you get stuck in the snow.”
