Four primary schools from across Porthcawl went head to head on Tuesday, March 24th in a bid to be crowned Quizmaster Champions in the annual Porthcawl PCSOs Primary Quizathon.
Year 6 pupils from West Park Primary, St Johns School and St Clare’s Prep School travelled to Nottage Primary on Suffolk Place to join Nottage Pupils for the grand championship quiz final on Tuesday morning.
Co-ordinated and hosted by PCSOs Leighton Rees, Sharyn Philemon, Carl Wesgate and Holly Prosser of the Porthcawl sector of South Wales Police, the quizzes started last November with six semi finals, including rounds with pupils from Porthcawl Primary and Newton Primary.
Miss O Halloran, headmistress of Nottage Primary, gave all schools a warm welcome at 10am before PCSO Philemon took to the mic. Pupils then battled it out to pick up points on a range of general knowledge topics including geography, history, maths, popular culture, spelling, sport and the police.
At 11.30am, pupils and teachers sat with baited breath as the winners were finally announced. The prestigious title of Primary Quizmasters 2009 went to St Johns School, whose winning team ‘Stop Asking us for a Name!’ consisted of David Sharp, William Perkins, Remy Rock, Gianluca Bianchi and Dylan James.
A close second was the ‘Flower Power’ team from Nottage Primary, with the ‘Vampire Chipmunks’, also of St Johns, coming third.
Porthcawl Town Council’s Mayor, Councillor David Newton-Williams and his Mayoress Gaynor attended the final, presenting the winning pupils with a trophy and certificates for their efforts.
Mr Ashton, Year 6 teacher of Nottage Primary said: “This has been a great opportunity for the children to interact with other pupils from across Porthcawl. They have enjoyed the whole quiz process and were really excited for the final today.”
PCSO Leighton Rees said: “After the success of last year’s Quizathon we were really looking forward to doing it again this year. The quizzes are a great way for us to interact with the children and teachers in the community whilst having some educational fun along the way.”
