Porthcawl Police Officers are set to get out and about on pedal patrol thanks to the restoration of two police mountain bikes.
Instead of hot footing it around Porthcawl, four police officers from the Porthcawl Neighbourhood Policing Team have received specialist bike training in efforts to conduct more efficient high visibility patrols around town.
Porthcawl Sergeant Mike Davies said: “Foot patrols allow officers to personally interact with the public, and vehicle patrols mean officers can cover more ground, but patrolling on bikes will enable officers to do both. Now we can do targeted patrols of the whole of Porthcawl more efficiently, including hard-to-reach areas such as dark rear lanes where youths occasionally congregate.”
After being in storage for over 5 years, Porthcawl station was granted £200 to have the set of bikes repaired and upgraded. They contacted ‘Carconomy’ on Station Hill, who last week worked to get the bikes back to their former glory.
Four Porthcawl PCSOs will also be receiving bike patrol training in the near future, to ensure the bikes are utilised to their maximum potential.
Sgt Davies added: “With summer on the way, the bikes will also be a useful travel method to assist covert police operations. We’d like to thank Peter from ‘Carconomy’ for getting the bikes up and running again.”
