There were smiles all round when 8 year old Thomas Hutt from Brackla was presented with 1st prize for winning the Car Crime Competition held on Central West Police Open Day on 4th July. Thomas was successful in identifying the 10 factors which made the car, a Mitsubishi Colt kindly donated by Nathaniels for the day, appealing to the passing thief.
Among the indicators Thomas spotted were:
Car key left on a wheel
Money on the dashboard
Satnav holder stuck on the windscreen
Parcel shelf removed and items on view in the boot
Thomas won a trip to Thunder Road Café for him and his family, kindly sponsored by Thunder Road Motors, Bridgend. Safer Bridgend goodie bags went to 2nd prize winner 9 year old Amelia of Bridgend, and 3rd prize winner 8 year old Josh of Brackla.
Deborah Elward, Safer Bridgend Crime Redcution Tactical Advisor said “We really wanted to highlight that although newer cars can be more difficult to steal with up to date security technology, locking wheel nuts, etc people must ensure they do not become a victim of car crime. Don’t make it easy for the passing thief.”
“Never ever leave any items on display in your car: cash, sat nav, CD’s, mobile phones, even empty carrier bags, etc need to be removed from the car completely, or if this is not possible then lock items away in the boot before setting off on your journey and ensure that your parcel shelf is in place if your car is a hatchback. “
When removing satellite navigation devices, wipe away the suction marks off the window or dashboard with a cloth, as upon seeing these, a thief will assume you have simply put the device in the boot of the car.”
“In this warm weather, remember to close car doors, windows and the sunroof before locking your car when leaving it unattended, even for a minute.”
Finally, ensure that your car keys are always kept in a safe place away from doors and windows. There have been incidences of homes being broken into in order to obtain car keys. There are plenty more preventative tips here
“Open day was a resounding success and I would like to thank all 150 people who took part in the competition, and Nathaniels for their kind donation of a new car for the event.”
