The Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) for Bridgend is planning the first of a series of special Drugs Awareness road shows for the Borough which will be held at Wildmill Community Centre, Bridgend.

This event is being coordinated by Sergeant Mark Watkins and PC Kelly Thomas. It will take place on Friday September 4th and run from12.30pm through to 6.00pm and refreshments will be provided through the day.

“The road show has been designed for members of the public, young people, residents, families, or anyone affected by drink or drugs to come and speak to us in a safe environment and learn more about the topics,” said Sergeant Watkins.

“It will feature representatives from Communities First, South Wales Police, Community Safety and Bridgend Public Health Team to offer information and expert advice on any issues which may affect you or your family or friends.”

As part of the day’s programme Claire Fauvell, Substance Misuse Training and Prevention Coordinator will be holding a drugs talk which will also include a question and answer session.

PC Kelly Thomas added that throughout the day the drugs itemiser will be on show and demonstrations will be given showing how it works and how it can detect drugs or drug use on surfaces and body parts

“School Liaison officers will be on hand to speak to youngsters or concerned parents about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and there will be leaflets and literature available for anyone wanting to know more about specific drugs or alcohol abuse.

“We would urge anyone to come along and speak to us about any concerns they may have and we are sure we will be able to help. This event is about engaging with the community and helping to educate and inform people about the dangers and side effects of drugs and alcohol misuse.”

Claire Fauvel added: “The Drug Awareness Road Show is an exciting opportunity for all members of the public. Residents, young people, parents and families are all welcome to attend and learn more about drugs and alcohol and also what local agencies are doing to reduce the harm associated with substance misuse.

“During the day, there will be interactive discussions and presentations where everybody can have the opportunity to discuss their concerns or to find out what is being done about substance misuse in their community. Included in the day will also be a demonstration of the latest technology available to South Wales Police in detecting illegal drugs.

“This is a really exciting event where we all as members of Bridgend County can come together to learn and share about our experiences of drug and alcohol misuse. This is the first in a series of Road Shows and we will be rolling out further awareness events across the Borough.”
