Operation Firefly successful in reducing Anti social behaviour
Operation Firefly was run by Police and partner agencies throughout the weekends of August to try to reduce anti-social behaviour throughout BridgendCounty.
The areas that took part were Wildmill, Sarn, Pontycymmer, Pencoed, Nantymoel, Maesteg and Caerau, over 70 youngsters were involved in this initiative which was supported by Celtic Crusaders, Maesteg and Porthcawl Community Councils, Tesco Stores and Youth works.
Activities arranged for youngsters through the Community Safety Partnership involved horse riding at OgmoreBeach, Golf at the A48 Complex, Surfing with Ingemar Cressy at ConeyBeach, Beach games and a tag rugby festival with Celtic Crusaders. The youth drop in centre at Porthcawl comprehensive school was also available during wet weather.
PC Williams, Anti-social behaviour officer said “team spirit was great with the youngsters who were keen to be involved with this initiative”. Conway Hawkins, Anti-social Behaviour Co-ordinator for Bridgend said “this shows that engaging young people in activities has a positive effect on their behaviour”.
Our statistics for this period in the areas targeted showed a reduction in nuisance and Anti-social Behaviour calls. We hope to build on this experience and plan to run another operation during the Easter Holidays.
