Substance misuse can be described as the use of illegal drugs and the inappropriate use of alcohol, volatile substances, prescription and over-the counter medication. |
| Who is affected? |
Substance misuse can affect everyone regardless of how old they are, where they live or what they do. People can be affected personally, for example by experiencing problems with drugs or alcohol, through a loved one, or as a member of the community affected by anti-social behaviour due to binge drinking. |
| What does it cost? |
The financial costs of substance misuse can be measured in its effect on industry, through days taken off work, through the strain on health services, the costs associated with criminal damage. |
