The Be A Nice Guy (BANG) campaign is run by the Safer Bridgend Community Safety Partnership at this time every year to encourage people to respect the people and property surrounding them while out having fun and to remember the Firework Code.

Read these tips to help you Be A Nice Guy this Halloween and Bonfire Night.

Halloween (October 31st)

Trick or treating may seem fun to many, but to some people it can be very intimidating. Instead, Safer Bridgend urges young people to attend organised Halloween discos and other events.

  • If you do trick or treat, stay in your neighbourhood and knock on the door of people you know only.
  • Don’t throw things at people’s property or cause any other damage.
  • Try to keep the noise down

Guy Fawkes Night (November 5th)

The safest way to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night is to attend an organised display.

If you intend to hold your own display, follow these top tips:

· Only buy fireworks marked BS7114

  • Don't drink alcohol if setting off fireworks
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box
  • Follow the instructions on each firework
  • Light them at arm's length, using a taper
  • Stand well back
  • Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode
  • Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them
  • Always supervise children around fireworks
  • Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
  • Never give sparklers to a child under five
  • Keep pets indoors
  • Read all instructions in day light

Trading Standards in Bridgend will be conducting inspections and enforcement activities during the run up to bonfire night to educate retailers and to remind them of their legal responsibilities under firework legislation.

Bonfire Removal

The council, police and fire and rescue service will be working together to remove illegal bonfires from public land in order to protect the public from the potential serious injury and danger.
