Year 3 pupils from Tondu Primary School were treated to an insight into Islamic culture on Tuesday 16th June when they visited the Glamorgan Muslim Community Centre on Dunraven Street.
Organised by Tondu PCSO Martin Trask, seventeen pupils toured the mosque from 9.45am, as Mr Suleman Hawas, General Manager of the mosque, delivered talks on the Islamic religion and traditions.
Pupils were shown the Quaran and learnt about the process of fasting in Ramadan, the Islamic celebration of Eid, the lunar calendar, and the importance of Mecca. The children were then taken into the wash room where Mr Hawas explained the cleansing process Muslims complete before prayer.
The last part of the tour saw Mr Hawas demonstrate a daily prayer to the children in the prayer room, before the children each selected a mat and practised the ritual for themselves. The tour then finished with a question and answer session.
Miss Hanley, the Year 3 teacher at Tondu Primary also attended the visit. She said: “Our pupils learn about world religions as part of the curriculum, so visiting a place of worhip for the Islamic faith is a brilliant learning platform for them.”
PCSO Trask said: “This has been a great opportunity for the children to learn about another religion and culture that makes up our community. It’s important for young people to learn about diversity so we can appreciate and respect each other. The children really enjoyed themselves, so thank you to Mr Hawas for facilitating the visit.”
Mr Hawas said: “We were happy to have the children visit us today. They asked some fantastic questions and we’re pleased they enjoyed the presentation. Anybody is welcome to tour the mosque.”
