Throughout the summer, the Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Porthcawl East and Newton wards Police Constable Jerry Owen has been working with the local young people and taking advantage of the facilities available at the Griffin Park Youth Drop in Centre to give them an insight into the many facets of South Wales Police.
During PC Owen’s regular visits to the drop in centre he also brought along officers from some of South Wales Police’s specialist departments which enabled the youngsters to interact with different officers as well as the local officers they already know.
PC Owen decision to arrange these meetings came about as he knew the young people didn’t really know anyone else in the police although he is a popular and well known local bobby in the neighbourhood.
PC Owen said: “Setting up and running these events has encouraged a number of the young people to think further about what they would like to do with their future. One boy has said he would like to join the army and another has taken an interest in Firearms after quizzing the officers.
“During August we had visits from the Dogs section, Firearms unit and from the Mounted section. As well as giving the young people an insight into the varied aspects of our work they have also helped keep the youths occupied and preventing incidents of anti social behaviour in the area.
“I hope to make this an annual event for those who will be using the Youth Drop in Centre in the future.”
