Wales Rugby League and Safer Bridgend’s first Street Rugby festival of the year last weekend was a great success with 60 youngsters attending.

The festival, held in Waterton, was won by Caerau Cougars who beat Sarn 4 tries to 0 in the Final with the Cup being presented by South Wales Scorpions’ prop Liam Roach.

Nantymoel came third and won the Plate after beating Wildmill 3-1.

The best female player award went to Sharlene Williams of Nantymoel and the best male player was Ieuan Davies of Caerau.

Hannah Richards from Safer Bridgend said: “This is the first festival of four that we have planned over the summer months and it was a great success with 60 young people playing rugby. The goal for us has been to reduce anti-social behaviour and to get children involved in physical activity. On the evening of the festival there were no reports of anti-social behaviour in the four areas that took part".

"We are hoping that more young people from Caerau, Nantymoel, Sarn and Wildmill will get involved in the weekly sessions, learn new skills and have fun".

“I’d like to thank Wales rugby league for all their hard work and commitment, Communities First and Nathaniel’s Car Sales for organising the transport, South Wales Police for use of Waterton ground as well as all staff and volunteers involved in the programme".

"Safer Bridgend are looking forward to the next street rugby festival on Friday 23rd July.”

Mark Jones, Development Manager for Wales Rugby League said: “A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all with a well organised and competitive festival and a wealth of talent on show. Wales Rugby League would like to replicate the success of Street Rugby in Bridgend and set up the programme in all the Welsh counties and this could then become a national competition.”
