Blaencaerau Junior School speeding operation

Caerau NPT recruited an army of helpers on June 18th when Blaencaerau Junior School pupils got suited and booted in high visibility gear to help officers raise awareness of the dangers of speeding.

During the 4 hour operation, pupils patrolled the streets of Caerau and Nantyfyllon with the team, checking the speed of vehicles passing through ‘speeding hotspots’ identified in PACT and other community engagement methods – namely Heol-Ty-Wyth and Caerau Road.

7 vehicles were stopped for exceeding the 30 mph speed limit, the highest speed being 34 mph. It was then the children’s turn to deliver a lesson in the law, as they educated drivers by reading a sheet of facts and figures relating to speeding and the dangerous consequences.

The officers then gave all the drivers stopped a verbal warning, followed by an impactive message from the children that: “Next time, you could kill someone.”

PCSO Rachael Bargery said: “The purpose of this operation was to raise awareness and educate children and motorists on the consequences of exceeding the set speed limits for built up areas.”

“The children really enjoyed themselves, and it was a good opportunity for them to gain an insight into how dangerous speeding can be, and how officers deal with the situation.”
