Bridgend Women’s Aid received a cheque of £470.32 this week thanks to fundraising conducted by The Safer Bridgend Community Partnership and members of the Bridgend Domestic Abuse Forum through the international White Ribbon campaign.
In recognition of the world wide initiative, whose white ribbon symbol is used to represent devotion to eradicating violence against women, Natalie Tanner, the Council’s Domestic Abuse Coordinator based in the Bridgend Partnership office, ran a campaign to raise awareness and funds for domestic abuse support groups in Bridgend.
The campaign was launched November 27th 2008 in the Council’s Customer Service centre, and was backed by South Wales Police, the Bridgend division of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Celtic Crusaders, with staff and players wearing white ribbons as a show of support.
To raise funds, Natalie and colleagues sold white ribbons on information stalls across the borough. Stalls were held in the Bridgend Civic Offices, Tesco Brewery Lane, Tesco Maesteg, and The Rhiw Shopping Centre in Bridgend town centre. White ribbons were also sold at Maesteg, Porthcawl and Bridgend police stations, at the Valleys To Coast offices on Court Road, Bridgend, and Sensi Beauty in Maesteg.
In total, the awareness campaign raised a fantastic £470.32.
On Wednesday, 18th March, Councillor Alana Davies, Bridgend County Borough Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, and Natalie Tanner, proudly presented the cheque for £470.32 to Karen Miller, the Director of Bridgend Women’s Aid.
Natalie Tanner said: “We’re really pleased that the campaign has been able to make such a significant contribution to the Women’s Aid cause. Domestic abuse sufferers often need help and support from a host of agencies, so it’s important we maintain a joint partnership approach to make our services more effective for Bridgend Borough residents.”
