What is Hate Crime?

A hate incident is defined as any incident which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person as being motivated by prejudice or hate.
A hate crime is defined as any hate incident which constitutes a criminal offence, perceived by the victim or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate.

Who is affected?

Any person can be affected by this type of prejudice discrimination. Examples of this prejudice include incidents which are deemed to be racist, homophobic or faith related. The perception of the victim or any other person is the defining factor in determining a hate incident or hate crime.

What does it cost?

Hate incidents and hate crimes can be very costly in terms of an investigation, It can also be costly in terms of the physical and psychological health of the victim. the victims family and the community as a whole.

What help is available?

The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 introduced a range of racially aggravated offences. The anti terrorism, crime and security act 2001 expanded the range of these offences to cover religously aggravated offences.

Section 23 of Criminal Justice Act 1988 provides that in certain circumstances, it is possible for a statement made by a witness to be admitted as evidence, rather than the witness being required to give oral testimony.

It is important that these matters are reported to the authorities including South Wales Police who have a dedicated team of officers who will be able to assist.

What is being done locally?

Bridgend equalities forum chaired by Mr Landey of Bridgend County Borough Council meets every 2 months to discuss issues.

The Safer Bridgend Community Safety Partnership hosts a community cohesion meeting every other month to discuss community issues.
