Pencoed Junior School tackle litter problem

Pcso Dobbs and Katie Roberts

Pencoed Junior School is cracking down on environmental issues in conjunction with their local Bobbies, PCSOs Heather Dobbs and Robin Newman, and also Keep Wales Tidy.

Through their eco schools project, class 5 took to the park surrounding Pencoed Swimming pool and recreation ground this morning armed with bin bags and litter pickers.

They made a real difference to the area and by the time they had finished, it was spotless.

The children were asked how they thought that they could stop people from dropping litter, and they thought that there should be more bins in public spaces, and more signs stating that littering is an offence. The children have asked the community officers to be vigilant in the fight against littering, as it is something that they care deeply about.

PCSOs Heather Dobbs and Robin Newman stress the importance of teaching and working with the children on activities such as litter picking. PCSO Dobbs stated that they would continue to work with Keep Wales Tidy with other schools to get these important environmental messages across to the children.

Pencoed are one of many schools taking part in the eco schools challenge. Mr. Lambert, class 5’s teacher explained how they were doing their bit along with the litter picking for the environment. “We currently have an eco committee that compromises of 4 children from each year group, myself, the school caretaker, the head teacher and a handful of parents. We meet at the start of the school year and decide what action should be taken during the year to make our school an eco friendly place. This year we have been concentrating on reducing our energy by introducing a Light Bulb Award for the pupils. We are focusing again on recycling, taking on the yellow pages challenge run by Bridgend County Borough Council, and we are also getting green fingers working on our school garden, making our own compost from school dinner waste”.
