Local man given 5 year ASBO

A local man with a history of drink-related anti-social behaviour has been given a five-year anti-social behaviour order after breaching an earlier ASBO.

The man is prohibited from:

  • Causing harassment, alarm or distress within Bridgend town centre.
  • Entering any premises licensed for the sale of alcohol within Bridgend town centre.
  • Consuming any intoxicated liquor in any street or other public place in Bridgend town centre.
  • Being in possession of any intoxicating liquor in any street or public place in Bridgend town centre.
  • Travelling on any train in Wales or England having consumed any intoxicating liquor.
  • Possessing any intoxicating liquor whilst on any train or railway station premises in Wales or England.

PC Clive Bevan of Bridgend Community Safety Partnership stated that “this was a strong message that drunken anti social behaviour will not be tolerated”

The man had been previously banned under the Bridgend Pubwatch scheme. Pubwatch was set up July 2005. There are currently three Pubwatch schemes in the borough, Bridgend, Porthcawl and Maesteg. Nantymoel Pubwatch is currently in the process of being established.

South Wales Police Inspector Paul Lewis stated "The campaign represents a team effort between the police, licensees, licensed premises bar staff, and door staff, to discourage alcohol fuelled violence, and anti social behaviour. It will deliver a clear message on the need for sensible drinking, and that any acts of alcohol related disorder simply will not be tolerated."

Bridgend magistrates court imposed the lengthy ASBO term after hearing that the man had breached an interim ASBO last month following a bout of heavy drinking. Police had been called to deal with the man being drunk and using offensive language in a local recreation centre where children were present. After being advised to go home the man went into the nearby town and was arrested when he shouted at members of the public.

In a separate prosecution, the man also admitted assaulting two train staff who tried to stop him shouting abuse at passengers in January.

The man was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison. His ASBO will take effect on his release and if he breaches it he could face five years in prison.
