Boys in blue to toast start of summertime
The local boys in blue are upbeat about missing an hour’s sleep this weekend and will toast the start of summertime with Brace’s Bakery.
Police officers at Bridgend Police Station will have an extra difficult week on the beat after losing an hour’s sleep with the clocks going forward (25 March). Brace’s – Wales largest independent bakery – thought it was a crime not to help them celebrate the official start of summertime so dough-nated a toaster, bread, mugs and a specially made Brace’s clock.
PC Steve Carpenter and PCSO Richard Matthews, from Bridgend Police Station, were on hand to accept the delivery from the family baker. PC Carpenter said: “It was nice that Brace’s thought of the affect on the police officers and wanted to do something to make us feel valued. We’re always pleased to receive recognition for our work and a good breakfast will certainly set us up for the day.”
The British Summer Time will begin at 0100 on Sunday, after clocks will be moved forward one hour to 0200. The trade in an hour's sleep means darker mornings but lighter evenings.

Daylight saving was suggested in 1784 by American inventor and politician Benjamin Franklin, to allow people to enjoy more light in the evenings.
The movement of the clocks to make the best use of available daylight was introduced in 1916.
Many countries around the world use daylight saving time, including the USA, Russia, most of Europe and the Commonwealth.
The main reasons given for the use of summer time are the saving in power given by the longer hours of daylight in the evenings and the increased useful daylight leisure time available to those who work.
