Blaencaerau Junior School Stops Speeding Drivers!

Pupils and Police officers tackling the Pact Priority of speeding vehicles

Due to concerns raised in last weeks Caerau ward PACT meeting about excessive and dangerous speeding of vehicles, a Speeding Operation was undertaken by the Caerau Neighbourhood Policing Team at ‘Heol Ty Wyth’, Nantyffyllon.

Councillor Ken Hunt stated that He fully supported the work from the Caerau NPT and the involvement with local school children was a great idea. He expressed high hopes that many other schools in the area would follow suit and would become involved in the future.

The children became actively involved in the Operation, warning drivers of their actions and providing them with statistics of road casualties in Wales for 2006:

Reported Casualties in Wales 2006- Killed 163, Seriously Injured 1210 and Slightly Injured 11319

Child Casualties in Wales 2006- Killed 10, Seriously Injured 134 and Slightly Injured 1153.

32 Drivers were warned and given suitable advice about their manner of driving. The average speed on motorist was 37.5 mph in a 30 mph Zone.

PCSO Karl Smith who was actively involved with the Operation stated “On this occasion the drivers were only warned about their manner of driving and hopefully as a result of the children being involved, drivers will pay more attention to the speed restrictions enforced”.

Caerau Neighbourhood Policing team would like to thank all the children for their assistance and hard work in a very worth while Operation.

Involved in the Operation were 8 children from BlaencaerauJuniorSchool:
