Archbishop Mcgrath pupils take part in litter picking initiative in Tondu

Picture (McGrath 7), features PCSO Laura Jones, Head of Geography Caroline Grove, Year 7 pupils, Head Teacher Paul Hatton, and many red bags of litter.

Pupils from Archbishop McGrath Comprehensive School, Tondu, took part in a litter pick initiative on Monday 13th March 2006. The initiative was carried out with South Wales Police PCSO Laura Jones, and concentrated on picking litter from the school grounds, and Bryn Road.

The Year 7 pupils were well prepared for the task, with gloves, picking claws, and plastic tops. The 1 - hour operation resulted in the collection of over 20 large bags of litter, which made dramatic improvements to the look of the school grounds, and nearby roads.

The pupils who took part in the litter pick were all members of the Archbishop McGrath "Environment Club". The school's Head of Geography Caroline Grove runs the club that consists of 25 members. The club appreciates the local and world environment, and actively takes parts in events to raise money for the Rainforest Concern Charity. In 2005 the Environment Club raised £300 for the charity, that contributed to saving 10 acres of rainforest. The club aims to save another 10 acres of rainforest in 2006.

Caroline Grove stated "The pupils were enthusiastic to take part in this initiative, and are committed to doing further litter picks. The pupils are determined to ensure the community remains litter free".

The team approach towards the initiative was evident with the contribution of Archbishop McGrath Head Teacher Paul Hatton, and School Caretaker Bill Jones.

South Wales Police PCSO Laura Jones noted "The litter pick has certainly improved the physical appearance of the neighbourhood, and will provide benefits that impact on the entire community. This initiative further represents the strong relationship that South Wales Police has with the comprehensive school, and of how collective working can enhance communities".

South Wales Police urges people to dispose of rubbish responsibly, using bins provided. This will ensure Bridgend Borough neighbourhoods remain litter free.
