Porthcawl carnival success
On Saturday July 23rd thousands flocked to sunny Porthcawl to attend this year’s carnival organised by Porthcawl Buccaneers. Large crowds lined the streets from Sandy Bay to Porthcawl Rugby field where entertainment was organised.
The theme for this year was ‘Theatre shows’ which saw seven floats and many dancers dress up for the procession to the rugby field. The procession was led by the Police van and followed by Porthcawl RNLI, and fire engine. The floats consisted of Lion King, We Will Rock You and Grease with walkers from Porthcawl Primary, Freshstart and Fairtrade.
The floats were of a very high standard and were difficult to judge. The winners chosen by Porthcawl Mayor Barbara Stubbs were adult float Ancient Briton, children float Bright Beginnings and best walkers Porthcawl Primary and Freshstart.
The entertainment continued at Porthcawl Rugby Club where numerous rides and stalls were in place. There was also a gymnastic and dance show performed by Penybont Gymnastic Club and Bridgend Dance Centre on the field followed by local band Above and Beyond performing a few songs.
Carnival organiser Kerry Marlow said “It was a tremendous day enjoyed by all with excellent floats and the entertainment was absolutely brilliant”.
He added that “Porthcawl Buccaneers were happy for the carnival to provide a special girl her wishes off being a princess for a day”. Nine year old Annie Rose of Ogmore Vale, was made carnival princess at Porthcawl Buccaneer’s Carnival, thanks to a wish-granting charity, Follow your Dreams. Annie’s finery was from Pink Butterfly Brides and she was chauffeured to the event by Singleton Limos and pampered at Glam Hair studios, Ogmore Vale.
Operation ‘QUALIFY’ was carried out by Porthcawl and Pyle NPT and assisted by a team of seven specials. PC Bluck said “The carnival was a success and was nice to see people enjoying themselves in the sunshine. There were no licensing issues or public order offences to deal with”.
