Operation Quake
Launched on the 22nd of May to tackle Road traffic collisions, Operation Quake aims to improve conditions within the Maesteg sector. Launched as a follow on operation to Operation Molecule and the fire services campaign Domino Effect, Operation Quake seeks to promote road safety from an educational perspective to road users.
Pc Sally Thomas, working closely with station commander David Lake looked into the main reasons for RTCs and found them to be mostly human error influenced by factor such as Speeding, mobile phone use when driving, Failure to wear seatbelts and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The operation held successful stalls at the party in the park and Ogmore Vale family day event and hope to continue the success at the Blaengarw family day carnival in August. The stalls hosted a mock up of an RTC scene with live made up casualties, followed by a hard hitting video of RTCs and the consequences of speeding, no seatbelts, mobile phone usage and drink driving. For the younger audience an alternative video was shown, which whilst still educational was more toned down.
The operation continues through September to coincide with the school holidays, with high visibility mobile patrols made throughout the Maesteg sector. Automatic number plate recognition operations will also be conducted on specified dates, not only assisting in reducing vehicle crime but also providing reassurance to the public.
