Pupils from Cefn Cribwr Primary School in Pyle are set to be kings of the road following a road safety scheme delivered by the Bridgend Road Safety Partnership and South Wales Police.

Road Safety Officer Gail Calford and Pyle Neighbourhood Policing Team PCSOs Karen Powell, Jon Howe and Tom Davies have teamed up in a bid to teach the Year 2 class of 6 and 7 year olds at Cefn Cribwr Primary how to stay safe when out and about crossing roads.

The team are three quarters of the way through the ten week scheme known as ‘Kerb Craft’, which every Wednesday morning sees the youngsters learn a variety of road safety lessons, such as safe places to cross, and how to recognise when a vehicle is about to take off.

After being buddied with an officer or school volunteer Eirwen Coombes, Gail leads the children around the Cefn Road area. On one of their latest outings, the children practised crossing at Heol Newydd, and talked about vehicle movement indications such as smoke, lights and the engine rumble.

Cefn Cribwr Primary Head-teacher Stephen Howells said: “The ‘Kerb Craft’ scheme is a fun and interesting way to introduce road safety to our younger pupils. The children look forward to Gail and the PCSOs coming each week and see it as a treat.”

PCSO Karen Powell said: “It’s really important for children to be introduced to road safety at a young age, so that they grow up aware of the potential dangers. It’s a pleasure linking in with Gail to interact with the children and create a safer community.”
