Caerau team gets intercom for flats

PCSOs Rachael Bargery and Maria Pascoe try out the new intercom system.

The Maesteg Neighbourhood Policing team has been working closely with the residents of a sheltered housing development and their landlord to try and improve security at the scheme.

In recent months PCSOs Rachael Bargery and Tom Davies have been working closely with Valleys 2 Coast Housing Association to bruing forward the provision of an intercom system at the block of flats on Dyffryn Road, Caerau.

Residents have been reporting a high incidence of anti social behaviour to the Caerau Neighbourhood Team over a period of months and officers have been liaising with V2C to try and make improvements to the security of the complex.

PCSO Bargery said: “We have responded to reports when youths both young and old have entered the block of flats and causing annoyance, such as emptying litter bins, banging on doors and even stealing property. This anti social behaviour has also led, unfortunately, to the more extreme levels when on one occasion litter bins were set alight.

“We identified the problem and then approached V2C to see what could be done. It was very apparent, that there were no limits on who could enter the flats, at any time of the day or night.

“It was agreed that an intercom system would be installed which should put an end to the problems being experienced by the residents.

“We are now pleased to say that the system has been put in place and as a result there have been no further reports of youth annoyance or antisocial behaviour at the flats.

“Residents now have the advantage of only allowing people they want into the flats.”
