Bridgend Pupils Get Into Gear for Road Safety Quiz Final
Twelve primary schools from across Bridgend borough battled it out on Friday 12th June to be crowned Road Safety Quiz Champions in the Odeon Cinema at the Pines.
Organised and held by South Wales Police and the Bridgend County Borough Council Road Safety Partnership, the quiz final has come after a month of preliminary heats which started in May. The top three schools from each weekly heat landed a place in last Friday’s final.
From 10:30am, School Liaison Officer PC John Stewart hosted the final as pupils went head to head in five rounds on road safety, road signs, observation, and general knowledge, then a final bumper road safety heat.
During the observation round, the teams were treated to a preview of a trailer for brand new Disney film ‘Up’, where they later had to answer questions on what they noticed in the clip.
After winning two of the five rounds, Thomas Williams, Ayisha Dyer, Jade Harvey and Sam Griffiths from Penybont Primary School in Sunnyside, Bridgend were crowned overall winners with an incredible 67 points. With just half a mark between themselves and Penybont, Trelales Primary School from Laleston, Bridgend were a worthy runner-up with a score of 66 ½.
As a result of all their hard work, Penybont Primary has won free tickets for their whole Year 5 class to see a brand new film at the Odeon. All members of the other eleven teams will also receive tickets to see a new film.
Bridgend County Borough Mayor Jefferson Tildesley attended the event and presented the winners with plaques to display in their schools.
The Bridgend County Road Safety Quiz has run annually for the past seven years in the borough. In preparation for the preliminaries, pupils learn about safety in the car, passenger safety, cycling, road signs, and much more during lessons.
Simon Ladbrooke, Road Safety Officer for the Council Road Safety Partnership said: “Holding a quiz allows the children to really hone in on what they’ve learnt during their road safety lessons. It’s always a pleasure marking the correct answers because it shows us they’ve learnt a great deal and the lessons are working. This is a fun way to test their knowledge and they’ve all done a great job.”
PC John Stewart, who organised the quiz with fellow School Liaison Officers PC Gavin Lynch, PC Steve Carpenter and PC Chris Warlow said: “Helping children to learn about road safety is another way we can engage with them and encourage safety in our communities. Knowing the children will take their road safety knowledge outside of the school gates makes the whole process worth while. We would like to thank the Road Safety Partnership for their support during the quiz process and to the Odeon for allowing us to use the cinema as a fun venue.”
