2011 London Riots

South Wales Police officers assisting at the London Riots

Between the 6th and the 10th of August 2011, London witnessed devastating scenes of violence. Buildings were torched, shops ransacked, and officers attacked with makeshift missiles and petrol bombs as gangs of hooded and masked youths laid waste to streets right across the city.

The first riot broke out in Tottenham, North London, which then spread to several London boroughs and districts and eventually to some other areas of England, with the most severe disturbances outside London occurring in Bristol and cities in the Midlands and North West of England.

The sheer number of incidents - including in Hackney, Croydon, Peckham, Lewisham, Clapham and Ealing - resulted in the London Metropolitan Police having to pour 1,700 extra officers onto the streets.

Some of the officers which were called upon to assist the Met. with policing these riots came from Bridgend BCU. Thanks to the help of all those officers which assisted in policing the riots, things were eventually brought under control - with arrests, charges and court proceedings now underway in order to bring to justice all those who were involved in the rioting.
