If you live near to an elderly, or vulnerable person, please take the time to think about who might be calling at their home.

There has been a number of incidents in the Pontycymer area where a male person has attempted to gain entry to peoples homes by pretending to be a British Gas official.

He asks people if they would like to change their Gas supplier to British Gas, then attempts to enter the house by making a request to use the toilet.

hHe is described as being white male, short stocky build with short dark hair, wearing black trousers, white shirt and a black coat with a British Gas logo. he also carries a clipboard.

South Wales Police offer the following advice.

Keep both front and back doors locked at all times.

Always use a door chain and viewer when answering your door.

Always ask for Identification, and check it carefully.

Council, and housing association staff, will make an appointment with you before they call at your home.

If a caller claims to be from a utility company like the Water Board or Gas, electricity supplier, ask them to make an appointment to call back when you will not be alone in the house.

If you have any doubts do not let the person in and dial 999.

If you have any information about this crime, please call South Wales Police on 01656 655555.
