Support the development of a balanced town centre economy
Opportunities to convert vacant space above retail premises into living spaces are being pursued as part of the plan to develop a 24-hour town centre. The expansion of the range of town centre leisure facilities such as cafes and restaurants that people both young and old can enjoy is also important
A major element of the success of the Town Centre regeneration programme will be the future development of arts, cultural, entertainment, social, sport and recreation, and community facilities within the Town Centre. By extending the range of facilities within the socio-cultural sphere there are benefits in terms of: local provision for local residents; addressing a wider range of needs within the evening and night-time economy; creating added attractions to the existing retail function thereby generating additional visitor numbers; and job creation and economic activity. Specifically, the provision of a new Town Centre Library is seen as integral to achieving these aims and aspirations.
Bridgend Town Centre is also the venue for major sport and recreation facilities. The Brewery Field is located on the northern edge of the Town Centre. It is the home of Bridgend RFC and Celtic Crusaders RLFC but also the venue for concert events. Similarly, Bridgend Recreation Centre to the south of the Town Centre has a variety of sporting facilities including gymnasium and swimming pool and space to accommodate non-sporting events.
