Improving Accessibility to Bridgend Town Centre

Bridgend Bus Station

The new Bridgend Bus Station was opened in November 2004. This major development and investment project was supported by Transport Grant from the Welsh Assembly Government and it includes an interchange link from the Bus Station to Bridgend Railway Station.

The enhancement of Bridgend Railway Station has already seen the re-opening of the Vale of Glamorgan Railway Line for passenger services in 2005 that has expanded capacity of the station. Further improvements at the station will develop this capacity and accessibility thereby making a substantial contribution to Town Centre regeneration and development potential.

Town Centre Car Parking

There are approximately 2000 car-parking spaces in Bridgend Town Centre for use by shoppers, visitors, and those working in the Town Centre. An annual rolling programme of improvements of the car parking facilities in the Town Centre is undertaken by the Council. In addition, cycle routes and safe routes to schools to encourage healthier, more environmentally friendly ways of travelling into the Town Centre are being implemented by the Council.

Safer Town Centre Pedestrian and Vehicle Access

The introduction of new automatic rising bollards at the primary shopping area entry and exit points has improved safety within the pedestrianised areas of the Town Centre. This system is linked to CCTV Control through cameras and intercoms to facilitate access by authorised vehicles and prevent illegal access to the great benefit of pedestrian safety. The construction of the Coychurch Road Link as part of a new supermarket development in the Town Centre will bypass the existing poorly aligned Coychurch Road/Cowbridge Road junction. It will complete the outer box-distributor road system around Bridgend Town Centre that will also include the Inner Bypass, Cross Valley Link and Tremains Road enabling the reduction of extraneous through-traffic in the Town Centre.
