Shopwatch Scheme providing Shopwatch Specials

A typical week for Special Constable Gavin Sibley, involves a combination of his employment at the Sainsbury's Supermarket, McArthur Glen Shopping Outlet, Bridgend, along with his volunteer role with South Wales Police.

This exciting new initiative called the Shop Watch Scheme, unites South Wales Police with the retailers in Bridgend, and provides a powerful new tool in fighting crime.

The benefits of the Shop Watch Scheme include:

(1) An increase in the dedicated police presence in and around retail premises.

(2) A visible deterrent against retail - related crime and anti social behaviour.

(3) Helps build safer environments for both customers and staff.

Sainsbury's Deputy Manager Mr Steve Cole stated "The Shop Watch scheme has enabled Gavin to learn new skills, and when on duty as a Special Constable he has the same powers as regular police officers. His new role is a clear deterrent to any criminal activity, and he provides reassurance to our customers, both when in his Sainsbury's uniform, or when on duty in his police uniform."

Mr Steve Cole continues "The skills Gavin has developed via his police training can be easily transferred to the workplace, and include the ability to manage confrontational situations, leadership, and personal safety. This additional training will only be of a benefit to our customers at Sainsbury's."

South Wales Police Chief Inspector Paul Murphy notes "The links between South Wales Police and retailers will be even stronger as a result of the scheme. It represents the continuing efforts being made by the police to work collectively with retailers, to reduce retail crime, and make our communities safer."
